Mario Kart 64

Kart racer where you pick from Mario universe characters and compete across 16 tracks in grand prix cups or versus modes. Races use 3D courses but sprite-based racers and items. You choose engine class—50cc, 100cc, or 150cc—which affects speed. Each kart handles differently in weight, acceleration, and top speed. Item boxes scattered on tracks give power-ups: shells to knock opponents off course, bananas that spin out anyone who hits them, lightning bolts that shrink rivals temporarily. Battle mode pits you against others in arenas where the goal is popping balloons rather than finishing first. Two camera angles available. Up to four players can race simultaneously in split-screen.
