About

Shadow of the Beast is a side-scrolling platformer where you fight through hostile environments as a transformed creature seeking revenge. You'll traverse twelve levels filled with enemies and environmental hazards, relying on melee combat and precise jumping. The game uses parallax scrolling to create layered backdrops that move at different speeds, giving depth to alien landscapes. Combat is straightforward but unforgiving—you take hits from creatures that require careful timing to defeat. David Whittaker's soundtrack accompanies the action with sampled instruments. The visual design leans heavily on color gradients and detailed sprite work. Expect trial-and-error progression as you learn enemy patterns and platform layouts. It's a product of late-'80s design philosophy: high on atmosphere, demanding in execution.
