Sonic Adventure 2 splits its campaign into hero and villain routes, each with three gameplay styles. Sonic and Shadow sprint through high-speed platforming stages built around momentum and rail-grinding. Tails and Eggman pilot mechs in third-person shooting levels where you lock onto targets and blast through waves of enemies. Knuckles and Rouge explore open arenas hunting for emerald shards using a radar system. The story pits Sonic's crew against Shadow—a new rival hedgehog—and Eggman, who's weaponizing ancient Chaos Emeralds to hold the world hostage. You'll alternate between saving it and threatening it depending on which side you pick per mission. Each character has distinct move sets, so the three styles don't overlap much. If you want variety over consistency, the structure delivers that.
