Toontown Online was a Disney-run MMO where you played a cartoon animal defending a colorful town from invading business robots called Cogs. You'd customize your Toon, then tackle story missions (Toontasks), play minigames for currency, and battle Cogs using gag-based combat—think throwing pies and dropping anvils instead of swords. The Cogs wanted to corporatize everything, turning playgrounds into office buildings, so you'd team up with other players to push them back. It ran from 2003 until Disney shut the servers in 2013. The loop mixed lighthearted combat, social hangouts, and progression through increasingly tough Cog encounters. If you wanted an MMO without the usual fantasy grind, this was Disney's answer—though it's now only playable via fan-run revival servers.
