Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter is a dungeon-crawling RPG with tactical combat and a built-in restart mechanic. You navigate a single massive underground structure—no world map—fighting visible enemies in turn-based encounters governed by action points. Characters spend AP to move and chain combo attacks; there's no magic system. Loot spawns randomly in dungeons. Combat initiative depends on who touches whom first on the field. The twist: protagonist Ryu can transform into a dragon, but each use ticks up a percentage counter. Hit 100% and it's game over. The game expects you to restart from the beginning multiple times, carrying over items and experience. Higher D-ratio percentages from previous runs unlock new areas, making each playthrough a step toward escape from the subterranean labyrinth. It's structured around incremental progress through failure rather than a single campaign.
