You pick a house at the start, shaping which students you'll mentor and which faction's perspective you'll experience as war looms. The game splits time between academy phases (building relationships with students, guiding their skill development) and grid-based tactical battles where positioning and unit classes matter. Your teaching choices directly affect how students perform in combat. Each house follows a distinct storyline that eventually diverges into conflicting paths, so your initial pick determines which side of the continent's brewing conflict you'll fight for. The Church of Seiros oversees the academy, adding a religious authority layer to the political tensions.
