River Raid is a vertical scrolling shooter where you pilot a jet up an enemy-controlled river, destroying bridges to stop troop movements. You navigate a procedurally shifting waterway packed with helicopters, fuel tankers, and enemy jets, firing rapid missiles to clear a path. The river narrows and widens unpredictably—crash into the banks and you're done. Fuel drains constantly, forcing you to land at depots between firefights or risk running dry mid-mission. Your jet handles with hair-trigger sensitivity: slight stick movements send you banking hard, useful for dodging but easy to overcorrect. Speed is adjustable, letting you slow for tight squeezes or gun it through open stretches. A warning sound tells you when fuel's critical. It's a reflex test with resource management baked in—one lapse ends the run.
