Rome: Total War splits play between turn-based campaign management and real-time tactical battles. You control one of three Roman families (or eight other factions outside the main campaign) across Europe, North Africa, and the Near East during the late Republic and early Empire. The full campaign requires conquering fifty provinces and winning popular support before taking Rome itself to claim the imperial throne. A shorter variant tasks you with seizing fifteen provinces faster than rival factions. Between battles, you'll manage cities, recruit units, handle diplomacy, and move armies on a strategic map. When armies clash, you command formations directly in real-time engagements. Suits players who want both grand strategy and hands-on control of ancient warfare.
