SteamWorld Dig is a 2D mining platformer where you dig downward through randomized underground layers beneath a Western town called Tumbleton. You're Rusty, a robot with a pickaxe, carving your own path through dirt and rock to collect ores and resources. Haul what you find back to the surface, sell it for cash, then buy tool upgrades and ladders. Coal fuels your lamp, water powers special abilities—both deplete as you dig deeper. Combat exists but isn't the focus: enemies with specific weak spots appear as you descend through distinct environmental zones. The terrain randomizes each playthrough, so loot spawns in different spots. If you dig yourself into a dead end, buy a ladder or self-destruct to reset topside. Dying costs a repair fee, but you can retrieve dropped loot. Works for players who like spatial puzzles and the risk-reward of pushing deeper before surfacing.
